Ouzoud Activities: What to Do at the Ouzoud Falls?

This is obviously the first activity to do when you arrive.

Before even heading down toward the river, take a moment to look at the falls from above. The landscape is bigger than photos usually suggest.

You can see the falls, the valley, the rock faces, and the vegetation lining the river. The waterfalls drop in several tiers and reach about 110 meters in total height.

Don't settle for the first viewpoint. As you move along the trails, the angle changes completely: some viewpoints show the falls head-on, others reveal more of the valley. The further down you go, the more you realize just how tall the falls really are.

If you really want to experience Ouzoud, head down to the bottom of the falls. That's where things get more interesting.

From up top, the falls feel distant. At the foot of the cascades, you feel the roar of the water, the spray, the coolness, the power of the falls, and the true scale of the site.

The trails wind gradually down toward the river through different zones of vegetation and local shops. The climb back up can take more effort, especially on hot days.

Of all the Ouzoud activities, this is probably one of the most iconic.

Once you're near the river, small boats let you get closer to the falls. The ride is short, but it offers a completely different perspective.

From the boat, you look up at the falls from below. The roar grows louder, and the spray increases as the boat gets closer. This is often the moment when you get some of the most striking photos of the day.

Boat rides at the foot of the falls are commonly included in Ouzoud excursions.

The Barbary macaques are among Ouzoud's most famous residents. With a bit of luck, you'll spot them in the trees or along parts of the trail.

Travelers usually just call them the Ouzoud monkeys. They live freely in the area and, for many visitors, are one of the day's real surprises.

But a few simple rules need to be respected.

The name Ouzoud is deeply tied to the olive trees surrounding the site. Around the falls, you'll pass through areas where the trees have been part of the landscape for generations.

This part of the visit is much quieter than the areas immediately around the restaurants and viewpoints.

If you genuinely enjoy walking, don't limit yourself to the main path. Several routes around Ouzoud let you extend the exploration.

After several hours of walking, lunch becomes almost an activity in its own right. Around the site are a number of small restaurants and terraces.

Depending on where you choose, you can eat facing the valley, the river, the falls, or the gardens and olive groves.

Ouzoud is particularly photogenic. But the trap is taking every photo from the same spot.

For genuinely different shots, photograph the falls from above (to capture the whole valley), from the trails (to add vegetation in the foreground), from below (to show the true height of the falls), from the boat (for a much more immersive perspective), and among the olive trees (to add more context to the landscape).

The light changes dramatically between morning, midday, and late afternoon, so vary the time of day too.

On hot days, heading down toward the river usually means finding a cooler atmosphere. The vegetation, shade, and proximity to the water make the lower part of the site particularly pleasant.

This is a good moment to slow down. Sit for a few minutes, watch the boats, listen to the falls, simply enjoy the place.

Not every activity needs to be organized or paid for. Sometimes the best thing to do at Ouzoud is simply to stay still for a few minutes.

Many visitors arrive, head down to the falls, and then leave. Yet the village and the inhabited areas around the site are also worth a few minutes.

Ouzoud also has a historical link to olive oil production. Around the site, you'll find traces of traditional mills tied to the surrounding olive groves.

Not all of them are necessarily accessible or in operation when you visit, but they tell an important part of the local story. If you're traveling with a guide, ask them to explain how these mills were used.

A self-guided visit works perfectly well if your main goal is simply to see the falls. But a local guide can add much more depth to the day.

For many travelers, Ouzoud is visited as a day trip from Marrakech. The site sits about 150 km northeast of Marrakech.

The journey usually takes several hours round trip, which means you should set aside a full day.

There are pools and stretches of water around Ouzoud, and some tourist sources mention swimming as a possible activity. But before getting into the water, be cautious.

Conditions can vary depending on the season, water level, current, weather, and the specific area.

Never assume a spot is safe just because other people are swimming there. If you want to swim, ask locally on the day of your visit.

The surroundings of Ouzoud also allow for more active pursuits. Quad bike outings are offered in the region, particularly along routes through the rural landscapes and areas around the falls.

This activity is aimed more at travelers who want to complement the classic falls visit with something more dynamic.
